Something Went

Something went
when you entered
scattering darkness in the room
where there was glowing natural light

stains appeared on the soft pastel walls
press of feet
on the carpets thick
crystal glasses ground in hands of stone.
Others came too
dominion of darkness grew

Something went when you came
My palace closed on me

Patience was a wall
I sat on
waiting for mornings
dressed in renewal

Train Memoirs

Monday to Saturday

This daily movement from one station to another
                         From home in one city

                         To work in another

From woman to worker and back--
Countless faces to wear and discard

Among crowds who speak and look different
                         Oh so different
                         Their clothes, their smells--
                         Their gestures and plans---

To adapt and change was possible
                         But not easy

After the long aloof silence
                         And pain of exclusion
I discovered myself in the otherness of me
I joined the throng as M.S.T.
                         Monthly season ticket holder
                         That was me.

Crime and The Law

Punishment is a necessary element in our growth . As children parents used to punish us for our mistakes. Teachers punished us for disrupting the institutional discpline, for negligence of duties and for character deficiencies. The aim of all such punishments was correction and reformation. As we grew up our mistakes became crimes., crimes against society, nation and crimes against human welfare and development. Ministers and bureaucrats, businessmen and technocrats, judges and professors, all are involved in some kind of corrupt practice or the other that undermine the progress of the state. Punishment should be proportionate to the crime and should be quick and effective. No one can have a second opinion regarding this. What is under question is the aim of punishment. Generally we feel that people should be punished in order to teach others in the society a lesson: that the suffering meted out to the criminal would make others aware of the retribution  and repurcussion of anti-social activities. One man therefore is made to suffer so that others remain good. For the goodness of the majority one man is made an example of . This has a demeaning effect on the person who is punished and shames him to an extent that makes him nurse feelings of revenge and anger . Far from being reformed, the criminal falls more and more into a regressive state where he plans to act in full vengeance. The aim of punishment should be to reform than to pay back a criminal in his own coin.

Pride And The Monkey

Pride is disasterous to the soul and the evolutionary journey towards salvation is rudely jolted by human pride.

Here is an enjoyable story from Hindu mythology.

Once Bhim of the Pandava dynasty was passing through a deep forest. Suddenly he came across a huge tail which obstructed his path.On looking closer he discovered to his great chagrin that it belonged to a monkey. Overcome with pride and arrogance as he considered himself to be the most powerful warrior and Lord Krishna's devotee, he addresed the monkey thus.
"O foolish monkey. Do you not see that I am Bhim the great Pandava warrior going on an errand of great urgency.Remove therefore your tail from my path , and let me pass."

The monkey gave him an astonishing reply." O Bhim, Mightiest of the mighty, help me to remove my tail, for I have grown so old and weak that the task is beyond me. I have heard tales of your bravery and might.Do please help me . By doing this you will not only be doing me a service, but you will also be doing a service to others who may be as inconvinienced as you by my tail."

Bhima tried hard to move the tail several times, with all his might, but each time he failed. After repeated efforts he failed as much as to lift the tail even an inch above the ground. He became red with anger when he found the monkey smiling away at his impotence.

At last Bhima began to feel helpless and weak. This had never before occured to him. Hs extraordinary power and skill were to no avail. He felt his pride ebbing away. Next he did what all do under such circumstances. When one's own resources fail to save us he prays to God.

Bhim humbly folded his hands and prayed to Lord Krishna the ultimate source of all power for guidance. On doing this his anger and arrogance disappeared miraculously. He prayed to the monkey with eyes closed and hands folded.

"Noble Monkey", he said ,"It is evident that you are a great soul, a Mahatma.Kindly reveal your identity. You have taken away my pride and all my strength."

When he opened his eyes he found the great Hanuman, the lord's most ardent devotee and a warrior of great prowess standing before him.Bhim touched his feet and begged forgiveness for his arrogance.False pride in his might was taking Bhim downhill on the path of destruction. But he was saved by the mercy of the Lord who helped him to overcome his pride.

Super men and Superpowers

Today we are looking forward to the advent of the Superman. A super age of technology requires the presence of super brains to maximise benefits out of this super toy. A child will not know what to do with a digital camera . He may play with it and break it into pieces, and then cry over the loss. Or he may laugh with abandon that he has successfully demolished a fancy item and clap his hands in glee. We have so many gadgets that make life easier and better now. Sometimes we own things which promise a lot of added benefits, but which we were better without. Such equipment may mean a lot for those who really need them, but for others they may prove disconcerting and disturbing.

With such developments in technology. a Superman who is working 24x7 for public welfare, will find his work easy.He does not have to take great pains to develop muscle power and energy quotient, but use that talent to improve his senses, to direct action where it is meant to be directed. He can sense out the enemies of good and without revealing himself, zap him out of exstence. With technology he will sense out Irenes andTsunamis, earthquakes and floods long before they are due, and stop them with a click of his mouse.

A Superman can take undue advantage of supertoys to wreak havoc and disaster everywhere. He is in love with madness and to feel his power he can do anything.

A Superman should not degenerate into a machine of disaster.

A Reason To Live

When we are finished with things that hold us to this world where  our life had its maintenance and stay , and we dont know why we continue  to trudge on without any visible reason , we must fnd out a reason for holding on. We have no control over our breath which may linger on for no perciptible reason. Yet we do not want it to fly away. To hold on,  we must strive to live effectively. Grandchildren are a huge treasure for us , for they make our lives joyful and meaningful by their innocence and love. There is no reason to despair when they are close to us.

Blessed are those whose grandchildren love them and share their lives with them. They do not judge you or comment on your senile foolishness. They treat you as their friends and make you feel ever so special and wanted. They love to hear the stories you tell them about your  heroic past and how you ruled over their parents with your stern sense of discpline.

No therapy can match their gurgle and laughter. They carry our bones forward into a new age of hope and love.

What is happening here?

We are all caught up in a storm. India is resounding with the slogans that confront corruption. In the past India had fought for freedom ; now she is fighting for her prestige and power and her right to fight corruption in a way where the masses canparticipate.. From all corners , the voice of India rises to a crescendo as crores of her population join in spirit Ann's fast unto death to salvage democratic principles and to bring to book scavengers of the country's wealth which they have stored in the vaults of alien banks.

Will the world leaders speak? No. Corruption is rampant . All are afraid ,as they have a stake.

Awake to a glorious morning of clean governance.
